Accessible tourism

The CPD – Consulta per le Persone in Difficoltà ODV ETS is a voluntary organization, founded in 1988. It is a Third Sector Entity that offers a plurality of services to citizens to promote the inclusion of everyone in the community: people with disabilities, but not only, also people who live in situations of non-self-sufficiency and economic, social and relational fragility.

The activities carried out by CPD over the years have always covered a variety of topics: protection of rights and advocacy; awareness and training; work on educating communities; support for economic and social vulnerabilities; development of models for inclusive reception.

In fact, CPD has been working for years to promote a culture of inclusion that aims to overcome the architectural, cultural and sensory barriers of cities and territories, with particular attention to the Piedmont context. Ensuring accessibility to the transport system and the usability of the cultural and landscape heritage for all tourists is one of the macro-objectives that the association pursues.

In particular, since 2007 with the birth of the Turismabile project, CPD has been committed to working to improve the accessibility and usability of Piedmont tourism, with a view to promoting Piedmont as a destination for all.

Accessibility as a key to the quality of tourism in Piedmont

TURISMABILE is a project of the Piedmont Region created by CPD - Consultation for people in difficulty, aimed at promoting the Piedmont region as an ideal destination for quality tourism, able to adequately respond to the needs, interests, expectations and economic availability of the various targets.

The project starts from the assumption that "Tourism for all" does not only mean tourism dedicated to people with special needs, but includes a broader idea that involves reception policies aimed at making all aspects of a holiday (transport, accommodation, cultural and natural heritage, places of leisure and entertainment) accessible to anyone.

In this context, Turismabile considers the accessibility of spaces and services as the indispensable prerequisite for guaranteeing people with specific needs the right to freely and independently enjoy tourist resources, but also believes that an "accessible solution" can be a useful intervention to make anyone's life more comfortable and satisfying. A ramp, for example, is essential to allow access to a structure by a person in a wheelchair but, at the same time, it is a valid and functional solution for a mother with a stroller or for all tourists with a trolley that must overcome a difference in height.

By adopting this approach, the Turismabile project aims to contribute to the development and consolidation of a new sensitivity towards accessibility issues and a greater knowledge of the needs of this specific target in order to progressively guarantee not only accessibility but the full usability of all the tourist resources of the territory.
